Carnival Spirit Honolulu repair alters Panama Canal cruise
Carnival Spirit's unscheduled repair stop in Honolulu on October 3, 2026, delayed its return to Seattle, forcing itinerary changes and compensation for guests on two consecutive cruises.

Carnival Spirit will return to Seattle one day late on Friday, October 9, 2026, after an unscheduled repair stop in Honolulu. The delay has forced major itinerary changes and financial compensation for guests on the ship's next voyage, a repositioning cruise through the Panama Canal.
The 88,500-gross-ton ship made the stop in Hawaii on October 3 to address a repair issue. Work was completed that evening. This caused the cancellation of a scheduled call in Victoria, British Columbia, for guests already onboard. The subsequent October 8 Panama Canal repositioning cruise from Seattle to Mobile will now depart a day later, on October 9, reducing the sailing from 16 nights to 15.
Itinerary adjustments confirmed for Cabo San Lucas and Victoria
The delay caused the cancellation of Victoria and changed the Cabo San Lucas stop to a sea day, while the Panama Canal transit remains unchanged. To keep its booked slot for the full transit on Monday, October 19, the cruise line confirmed it cannot visit Cabo San Lucas as planned. The call at Puntarenas, Costa Rica, on October 17 is unaffected. No other itinerary changes have been confirmed.
Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador, John Heald, noted in a video update that guests have written to him asking if the delay affects the Panama Canal transit. He confirmed the transit will proceed as planned.
Carnival outlines compensation for affected guests
Guests receive pro-rated refunds, onboard credits, and reimbursements for travel changes due to the delay and lost port calls. Captain Lorenzo Calogero informed guests, "the extra cruising day, including gratuities and pre-purchased beverage packages, will be on us."
Compensation for the shortened Panama Canal cruise is detailed below:
| Compensation Type | Details |
|---|---|
| Cruise Fare | One-day pro-rated refund to original payment method |
| Cabo San Lucas Excursions | Full refund for Carnival-booked tours, added to onboard account by October 10 |
| Pre-paid Packages | One-day pro-rated refund for drinks, WiFi, and gratuities by October 10 |
| Onboard Credit | $250 USD per stateroom |
| Travel Change Reimbursement | Up to $200 per person for non-refundable fees, with receipts |
The cruise line made its internet plan free so guests could rebook travel. Those who booked air through Carnival's FLY2FUN program will have flights adjusted automatically.
Pattern of 2026 disruptions continues for Carnival Spirit
This marks the third repair-related schedule alteration for Carnival Spirit in 2026. In early April, the line dropped Bimini from a Bahamas sailing for in-service work. Days later, an April 12 repositioning cruise from Mobile to Seattle departed a day late and cancelled Cartagena. Carnival has not disclosed the nature of any of the 2026 repairs or whether they are related.
The ship, built in 2001, is scheduled for a seasonal run from Mobile through April 2027. Carnival Valor is set to take over that homeport in May 2027. Following the Honolulu repairs, the ship was tracked moving at 22 knots on its return to Seattle. Carnival will reach out to guests by 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6 with further details.
