Terra Nova Expeditions Swaps to Terra Nova

Terra Nova Expeditions will launch its Antarctic operations with the Terra Nova Adventurer for the 2026-27 season. The company made the switch because its originally planned ship, the St. Helena, could not safely reposition from the Persian Gulf on schedule due to the ongoing situation in the Middle East.

According to the company, securing the charter for the alternative vessel took several months of work. The Terra Nova Adventurer will remain with the company for a minimum of three Antarctic seasons, starting in 2026-27.

Greg Carter, founder and CEO of Terra Nova Expeditions, framed the change as an opportunity. "Securing Terra Nova Adventurer for not just one, but three Antarctic seasons gives us the opportunity to turn an unexpected challenge into an exciting new chapter for Terra Nova," he said. Carter highlighted the ship's pedigree, noting, "She is a vessel with an extraordinary amount of polar experience behind her and one that many expedition travellers already know and love."

Ship History and Upgrades

The vessel has a long maritime history. It entered service in 1972 as the Danish ferry Kattegat. A major conversion in 2008 rebuilt it as an expedition vessel. Following that, it spent over a decade sailing in polar and remote regions for G Adventures, operating under the names MS Expedition and G Expedition.

Before its first season with Terra Nova, the ship will undergo a series of upgrades. The company stated the work will include new soft furnishings and decor throughout the vessel. Specific projects will involve remodeling the bar and lounge areas. A new Jacuzzi and sauna will also be added on Deck 5.

Itineraries and Company Background

The company confirmed that its planned Antarctic itineraries and expedition program will proceed unchanged. Guests whose bookings require further adjustments will be contacted directly. "The vessel may be changing, but the reason people travel with us is not," Carter said. "Antarctica, the expedition experience and the team behind it remain at the heart of what we do."

Terra Nova Expeditions is a startup founded by Greg Carter. Carter previously co-founded Chimu Adventures and served as chief commercial officer at Albatros Expeditions. The company had announced its long-term charter of the St. Helena in 2025, positioning that ship as its entry into small-ship Antarctic cruising.
