Ambassador Cruise Line has purchased the 670-guest Oceania Sirena from Oceania Cruises. The ship will be renamed Ambella and will form the launch vessel for a new German brand, Ambassador Kreuzfahrten, starting in summer 2028.

According to the company, this acquisition is a major step in its ambition to become Europe's leading cruise operator focused on affordable quality for the over-50s market. Germany is Europe's largest cruise source market, attracting more than 2.8 million cruise guests annually.

The Ambella's German Deployment

From summer 2028, Ambella will homeport in Bremerhaven and Kiel. It will offer a fully German-speaking experience with personalised service, high-quality dining, and destination-led itineraries. The ship's smaller size is expected to provide greater itinerary flexibility and access to ports less suitable for larger vessels.

The initial summer schedule for 2028 includes two repositioning cruises and 11 destination-focused itineraries sailing between May and September. Ports will be across Northern Europe and the Baltics, with some selected sailings to Southern Europe.

Christian Verhounig, CEO of Ambassador Cruise Line, said the move aligns with the company's growth strategy. "Entering Germany with Ambassador Kreuzfahrten is the next stage of that growth strategy," he stated.

Fleet Expansion and European Strategy

Ambassador's fleet expansion has been rapid. The line was founded in 2021 and welcomed its first ship, Ambience, in April 2022. It added Ambition in 2023. A merger with French operator Compagnie Française de Croisières (CFC) in January 2025 brought the ship Renaissance into the fleet.

The company now operates distinct brands for different European markets. The current fleet deployment is as follows:

CFC was recently rebranded as Ambassador Croisières, bringing the French operation under the Ambassador umbrella while retaining its distinct identity.

Semester at Sea Partnership

Alongside its seasonal German programme, Ambella will support a new long-term partnership with the Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE). The ship will host Semester at Sea programmes for approximately eight months each year following the German summer season.

The partnership is expected to begin in September 2028 and run for an initial ten-year period. Semester at Sea, founded in 1963, uses a passenger ship as a floating campus, combining academic study with international travel. Over 73,000 people have participated in the programme.

Scott Marshall, President and CEO of the Institute for Shipboard Education, expressed confidence in the new partnership. Without question, Ambassador will be the right partner and Ambella will be the right ship to elevate the Semester at Sea programme in profound and positive ways, he said.

Before joining Ambassador, the vessel will continue operating for Oceania Cruises through spring 2028 under a leaseback agreement. The company believes Ambella's intimate scale and premium environment will appeal to quality-conscious German couples and river-cruise customers looking to try ocean cruising.
