Carnival Cruise Line is reinstating full, in-person safety briefings for five of its ships this week. More than 18,700 guests on the Horizon, Panorama, Sunshine, Vista, and Firenze must participate in the mandatory drills before their ships can depart between September 26 and 28, 2026.

The cruise line has notified booked guests about the requirement. In an email, Carnival stated, "The safety of everyone on board is always our priority, and we are dedicated to maintaining responsible and secure operations." The notification explained that the brief but essential exercise is mandatory for all guests.

Impacted Sailings and Itineraries

The five affected ships are departing from four different homeports. Their specific departure dates and itineraries are detailed below.

Four of the ships are scheduled to depart at 3:30 p.m., while the Carnival Sunshine will leave Norfolk at 4 p.m. The full safety briefing must be completed before each ship's departure.

Regulatory Requirements and Recent Precedents

According to Carnival's brand ambassador John Heald, these full drills are a regulatory necessity. He explained in October 2025 that every ship in the fleet must conduct them twice a year to comply with agencies like the US Coast Guard and international SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) regulations. The drills ensure crew members are familiar with procedures when hundreds of guests are present at muster stations.

This is not an isolated event. Cruise Hive reported earlier this month that two other Carnival ships, Carnival Magic and Carnival Paradise, underwent similar full safety briefings on September 13 and 14 departures, respectively.

What Guests Can Expect

The process will begin with ship-wide announcements guiding guests to their assigned muster stations. According to the notification, these announcements will provide guidance on the process, which will include collective gathering at your assigned muster station to familiarize yourself with the necessary steps to take in the unlikely event of an emergency.

Drills typically start shortly before sailaway. Staterooms are usually accessible by then, and guests do not need to bring their luggage. Food and beverage service will close temporarily. At the muster stations, crew will demonstrate how to wear life vests, explain lifeboat boarding procedures, detail child reunification plans, and sound the emergency signal-seven short blasts followed by one long blast. Once the demonstrations are complete, guests are released and onboard activities resume as the ship departs.
