Viking Warns Guests of Itinerary Changes on Rhine River
Low water levels on the Rhine River are affecting the upcoming sailing of Viking's Viking Idun.

Low water levels on the Rhine River are expected to impact the August 19, 2026, sailing of Viking's Viking Idun. The seven-night cruise from Trier to Basel includes visits to destinations in Germany, France, and Switzerland.
Itinerary Changes Ahead
Viking has notified guests of the potential changes, citing historically low water levels affecting navigation on the Rhine River. The company has assured passengers that it is well-equipped to manage such situations, with its nautical and operational experts monitoring river conditions hourly.
According to Viking, its industry-leading river fleet and extensive network of docking locations and trusted hotels along its routes enable the company to minimize disruptions and preserve the expected experience for its guests. However, the company notes that current conditions remain challenging, and weather patterns and resulting river levels can change rapidly.
Ship Swaps and Alternative Arrangements
Viking has stated that it can implement ship swaps, allowing guests and their luggage to transfer to the same stateroom on riverboats beyond an affected stretch of river. This capability, combined with its extensive docking network and trusted hotels, helps to minimize overall disruptions.
Passengers will need to change ships in Cochem, Germany, before transferring to Strasbourg, France, by motorcoach due to low water levels near Maxau, a stop scheduled for Day 6 of the cruise. Revised docking locations may also be necessary where piers are unavailable.
Shore Excursions and Flexibility
Shore excursion programs may change, and some tours may need to be canceled. Viking has assured passengers that any necessary further changes will be confirmed onboard. The company notes that river conditions are dynamic and can change suddenly, for better or worse.
Viking is committed to taking care of its guests throughout their journey and delivering the enriching and unique experience they have been anticipating.
