Cruise ships visiting Greenland are being advised to limit their activities in certain areas, following concerns from local residents.

The Government of Greenland has issued a recommendation to avoid sailing in some of its fjord areas, in an effort to preserve the region's natural resources and recreational values. The decision was made after inquiries from local residents, who view the ships as a burden that affects natural areas, disturbs wildlife, and causes noise pollution.

The recommendation was announced in a press release by Naalakkersuisut, the cabinet and chief executive body of the Government of Greenland. While the government acknowledges that growing cruise ship interest in Greenland is positive, contributing to the development of the region's tourism industry, it also notes that any tourism development must occur sustainably and with respect for the local population, nature, and wildlife.

The purpose of this recommendation is to limit the impact on vulnerable natural areas and wildlife, and to accommodate the wishes of the local population to preserve the areas' recreational values and opportunities for hunting and fishing.

Greenland is a key destination for expedition cruise ships in the Arctic, welcoming dozens of vessels for exploration each year. The territory also hosts large cruise ships in some ports, with vessels calling regularly during the summer months.

Popular destinations in Greenland include Qaqortoq and Nanortalik, which are scheduled to receive more than 20 calls in the coming weeks. A range of cruise lines are visiting the ports this season, including Carnival, Oceania, Azamara, Seabourn, Phoenix Reisen, AIDA, Viking, Windstar, Explora, Holland America, Celebrity, and Virgin.

| Brand | Number of Calls | | --- | --- | | Carnival | - | | Oceania | - | | Azamara | - | | Seabourn | - | | Phoenix Reisen | - | | AIDA | - | | Viking | - | | Windstar | - | | Explora | - | | Holland America | - | | Celebrity | - | | Virgin | - |

Other ports welcoming large vessels in the next few years include Nuuk, Paamiut, Ilulissat, and Narsarsuaq.

The Government of Greenland's recommendation aims to strike a balance between the economic benefits of tourism and the need to protect the region's natural environment. By limiting cruise ship activities in certain areas, the government hopes to preserve the unique recreational values and opportunities for hunting and fishing that the region has to offer.
