Princess Cruises Captain Gennaro Arma Departs After 28 Years

Captain Gennaro Arma is leaving Princess Cruises after 28 years of service. The Italian captain announced his departure in an emotional LinkedIn post shared on August 31, 2026, according to a report by Cruise Hive.

Career and Commands

Captain Arma first joined Princess Cruises in 1998 as a cadet. He rose through the ranks and received his first command in 2015 aboard the Sea Princess. His subsequent commands included the Diamond Princess from 2018 and the Discovery Princess from 2022. Most recently, he served as captain aboard the new Star Princess, sharing the role with Commodore Nick Nash.

In his post, Arma stated, 'After 28 years with Princess Cruises, I have decided that it is time to close one of the most important chapters of my professional life.' He did not provide a final departure date or details on his next steps, but he also did not characterize the move as a full retirement.

Leadership During the Diamond Princess Quarantine

Gennaro Arma became widely known in early 2020 as the captain of the Diamond Princess during its COVID-19 quarantine in Yokohama, Japan. The ship, carrying 2,710 passengers, experienced a major outbreak leading to a 14-day quarantine. More than 700 people onboard were infected, with the last individuals not disembarking until March 1.

Arma's conduct during the crisis drew widespread praise. In recognition, he was named a Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic by President Sergio Mattarella. The Italian presidency cited his 'exemplary conduct' during the emergency.

A Key Role in New Ship Construction

Captain Arma's involvement with the Star Princess extended far beyond its launch. Princess Cruises appointed him as the newbuild site lead for both the Star Princess and its sister ship, Sun Princess, during their construction.

He was aboard when the Star Princess completed sea trials from the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone in August 2025. Princess Cruises took delivery of the vessel in September 2025. Arma then served as captain for the ship's maiden voyage, which embarked on October 4, 2025.

Princess Cruises has not announced whether another captain will be appointed to the Star Princess. It is also unclear if Arma will serve on any additional cruises before his departure. He has served as President of Istruttori Associati Marittimi (IAM) since 2021 and has not announced plans to leave that position.
