Serenade of the Seas Alaska Cruise Canceled

Royal Caribbean has canceled the current Alaska sailing of Serenade of the Seas. The decision was made after a technical issue prevented the ship from safely leaving Vancouver.

The cancellation occurred on Tuesday, September 1. Passengers had already boarded. They spent several days waiting for the voyage to begin after its original August 30 departure was postponed.

Aurora Yera-Rodriguez, Royal Caribbean's vice president of guest experience, communicated the news to guests. "Despite our teams' around-the-clock efforts to complete the necessary repairs, we were unable to resolve the issue in time for the ship to safely depart," the letter stated. It explained the cancellation became necessary.

Compensation Package for Guests

Passengers who had joined the ship are being offered a comprehensive compensation package. This applies specifically to those who boarded. Guests who previously canceled or did not arrive remain under their original terms.

The cruise line is providing a full refund of the cruise fare, taxes, fees, and pre-booked amenities like shore excursions. Pro-rated refunds will also be issued for beverage packages, dining packages, VOOM internet, and prepaid gratuities.

A previously offered onboard credit, equal to two days of cruise fare per guest, will still be honored. Any unused portion will be refunded after disembarkation. Royal Caribbean is also increasing its Future Cruise Credit offer to 100 percent of the fare paid. This credit is valid for a sailing departing within one year.

Ship Serves as Temporary Hotel

Guests are not being forced to disembark immediately. Royal Caribbean is making Serenade of the Seas available as a temporary hotel. This allows passengers to arrange travel plans.

Everyone must leave the ship by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2. The vessel must vacate the terminal then. Complimentary internet access is being provided to those without a Wi-Fi package. They can contact airlines, hotels, and family.

Impact on Next Sailing Unclear

Serenade of the Seas is scheduled to begin another Alaska cruise later this week. As of Tuesday evening, Royal Caribbean had not announced what impact the technical problem will have on that upcoming voyage.

The situation leaves the ship's immediate operational schedule in question. The line is working to resolve the underlying technical fault.
